Corel Paintshop Photo Pro x3

June 29th, 2010

Error Message: Using the paintshop photo project creator you cannot view any folders or files in the media viewer. Only the Desktop and My Computer are shown. This list does not expand and show the rest of the files on your computer

Program: Corel Paintshop Photo Pro x3
OS: Windows 7
Other Info:
Solution: Having spoke to Corel support there are only a few instances of this problem. There solution usually is to remove the Outlook key in the regestry under Windows > Explorer > Desktop >Namespace.

This didnt work for my situation, a full install of the Operating system and then to install the corel package straight away before installing anything else.

This has solved the problem.

There was probably some incompatibility with software already installed on the machine. In this case extras were blackberry software and orange internet anywhere software.

Another application has the switch identities …

February 8th, 2010

Error Message: Another application has the switch identities or identity login dialog showing. Choose one identity in that dialog before launching this application again.
Program: Microsoft Office 2007
OS: Windows XP
Other Info: Message Shows up when Outlook 2007 is automatically started when windows boots using MSconfig. The Error message shows up straight after outlook loads, once you click ok outlook functions as normal.

Solution: This problem started occurring after a windows update had installed windows desktop search. Desktop search was indexing all the files on the computer. Remove Windows Desktop and the problem goes away. As my client has no use for desktop search this was an acceptable solution.

It is not clear if this issue goes away once windows desktop search finishes its initial index. Maybe somebody could post if they have any success.

Work Blocking webpages? At School Want Facebook?

February 5th, 2010

All information included in this article is likely to get you into hot water with your employer or school if caught, however we get asked this question often, and so here is the answer:

Are the any ways to get around blocked sites?

The answer to this question is simple, you need to be able to get past the rules your company have put in place using a proxy server. The ones listed below are some of the hundreds that are available.

If none of these are any use, ( if they are tell your IT Department we can do a better job than they can ;-) ) try google for a ‘free proxy server’

HP C4EB8401 Printer error

February 5th, 2010

So i had a Hewlet Packard printer come in today with the following error on the screen

C4EB8401

So I ran the usual diagnostics:

Turn power off, then on again – Same Error number C4EB8401

Having spoken to a HP Support ‘Guru’ There are the steps we have taken to try and rectify the issue.

  • First we need to initialize the printer hardware with the help of below power cycle steps.
  • Verify that the unit is switched on. Disconnect the USB/Ethernet cable from the All-in-One and also disconnect power cable from All-in-One and also from wall outlet.
  • Wait 30 seconds.
  • Plug in the power cable to All-in-One and also to wall outlet.
  • Now turn On the printer and check the functionality.

if the above does not rectify it ( and lets face it, it wont)

Reset the All-in-One to the factory default settings by using these instructions:

1. Unplug the power cable from printer when the printer is powered on.
2. Press and hold OK and HELP buttons while plugging in the power cord.
3. Now turn On the printer.

Maybe you are now sucessfull in fixing your problem …. i wasnt.

After much persuasion this guy from HP told me this error message was due to the print cartridge cradle packing up.

So the printer is basically knakered ….. I have tried to source a replacement cradle… the cheapest i can find is £40 .

Then i found that you can buy a new brand new printer (same model) for £30.00 from argos.

HP Photosmart Printer B109 – Orange Live Box

February 3rd, 2010

Some information i would like to share with the world:

If you have a HP Photosmart Wireless B109 / B109n-z and are trying to connect it with an Orange Live Box you may be experiencing the following error:

Mac address filtering may be enabled on your wireless router This can prevent your HP printer from connecting to your wireless network

After spending a while chasing the red hearing of mac filtering on the Live box i pressed the Number 1 button on the back of the live box, this enter the box into pairing mode for 10 minutes during this time you should retry the HP Connection steps and this time it will work without the MAC Error.

So in summary:

If you get the above message. Press the Number One Button on your Orange Live Box and retry the set up .

Hope it saves you all some time.

Wi-Fi Direct

October 19th, 2009

The Wi-Fi Alliance, made up of companies like Intel, Microsoft and Apple, have announced that they will soon finish work on the new Wi-Fi Direct standard. Using this new technology Wi-Fi devices will be able to connect directly to each other (without a hotspot, router or Wi-Fi access point).

Much like bluetooth allows you to connect two mobile phones together or mobile phone and hands free kit, Wi-Fi direct will allow the same principles for laptops and computers.

In many ways this new Wi-Fi technology is similar to Bluetooth but with the range and speed of Wi-Fi. Like Bluetooth, devices will be able to discover one another and advertise available services. But unlike Bluetooth, devices can connect from across a home or office and conduct bandwidth-hungry tasks with ease. If the Wi-Fi guys get the power consumption right on this new technology then it could be the death knell for Bluetooth.

The Wi-Fi Alliance plans begin certifying devices for the Wi-Fi Direct in 2010.

Summertime – Protection for your laptop

July 10th, 2009

Your perfect vacation could be ruined in an instant by cyber-criminals looking to rob you of your personal information. Imagine stepping off the plane, ready to start your vacation, only to realize that between “here” and “there” your bank account has been wiped out and your credit card information stolen.

So here are five easy tips to ensure your vacation doesn’t end in disaster.

1. Pay attention to your surroundings – Remember, if you can read his magazine, the guy sitting next to you on the plane can also read your laptop screen! Just because you’re on vacation, doesn’t mean you’re not still in public

2. Beware of “Evil Twins” – Some Wi-Fi networks can appear to be legitimate, but are NOT. Criminals can create “dummy” networks or Web sites that contain the name of the airline, hotel or airport, but actually will direct your information to their own computer. If you always use the access keys provided by the airline, hotel, or airport, you’ll be protected

3. Always assume your Wi-Fi connections are being eavesdropped on – Never enter sensitive data (bank account information, social security numbers, etc.) when browsing the Web via a Wi-Fi network

4. Set any Bluetooth devices to “hidden”, not “discoverable” – If you do not use the Bluetooth function, turn it off altogether

5. Keep your security software current and active – Remember, mobile PCs are vulnerable to the same viruses, Trojans, and worms as your home computer so make sure your security software protects you on wireless networks, like Norton Internet Security does.

Facebook for iPhone 3.0: Long-overdue new features are coming, but not push notifications

July 3rd, 2009

If you own an iPhone, you’re probably using Facebook’s free client that’s still one of the most popular apps on the iPhone. The new version, out soon, brings a host of long overdue enhancements, but don’t hold your breath for push notifications yet.

“Facebook for iPhone 3.0 is coming very soon,” a Facebook developer who goes by the name Joe wrote in a post yesterday. “I can’t predict an exact date when I will submit to Apple, but I can say that I am about 98% done.”

Just don’t keep your fingers crossed for push notifications because that feature isn’t ready yet. Relax, the developer confirmed that push notifications are being implemented, they just won’t make it into the 3.0.

“You can expect it in a 3.1 update later this summer,” he wrote in the post.

Other than that, Facebook for iPhone 3.0 is a major new update that finally updates iPhone’s most-used app with a long-overdue set of features.

As you can see from screenshots, the application features a new home screen that pulls together popular Facebook sections, providing shortcuts to notifications, search and your content.

You will also be able to add your favorite profiles and pages to the home screen. Photo management and uploading has also been improved so your photo uploads from iPhone no longer appear only in the “Mobile Uploads” album on Facebook. News feed is overhauled not just visually, but enhanced with new features, like the ability to “like” people’s posts.

Here’s a full list of new features, as provided by the developer:

* The “new” News Feed
* Like
* Events (including the ability to RSVP)
* Notes
* Pages
* Create new photo albums
* Upload photos to any album
* Zoom into photos
* Easier photo tagging
* Profile Pictures albums
* A new home screen for easy access to all your stuff, search, and notifications
* Add your favorite profiles and pages to the home screen
* Better Notifications (they link to the comments so you can reply)
* Quickly call or text people right from the Friends page
* Messages you are typing will be restored if you quit or are interrupted by a phone call

Christian’s Opinion
If Facebook is part of your daily routine, you will love this fantastic new update. However, I must point out that the development of this app has been crawling at a snail’s pace since day one. I find it rather strange that Facebook allocated just one guy to the Facebook for iPhone project. He also appears to be doing additional coding for the company beyond the app so he’s constantly behind schedule with the mobile Facebook app for the iPhone.

If you ask me, it’s simply unacceptable that the iPhone users must wait months before getting Facebook features in the iPhone app that have been rolled out in the web version many months before. Besides, I’m bewildered by the fact that other developers have been ignoring this market thus far. This means we, the users, have no choice but to stick with the official Facebook app, its perks, and development difficulties.

With over 10 million people running this app on their iPhones, the market obviously exists and it’s huge – the opportunity is clearly out there. Give me Better Facebook, or Facebook Ultimate, you get the idea – just don’t let me wait two freekin’ years just to be able to upload photos to Facebook albums other than Mobile Uploads. To add insult to injury, BlackBerries have this, and many other advanced Facebook features for that matter out-of-the-box, and I’m not even mentioning Pre and its Twitter and Facebook integration at the OS level.
